Church Business Administrators are busy and typically responsible for a range of areas outside of Finance – areas like Facilities and Information Technologies. They’re involved in a host of administrative areas like Personnel Policy and Benefits Administration as well. They have a lot to do.
Here’s an obvious statement – the key to getting things done is being organized. Not only for efficiency reasons, but also in determining what’s important. Having an effective work planning system is paramount. There are many methods of time management, but the key is to find one that works for you.
Yes, there are urgent things that come up that can push the important things out of the way, and sometimes unexpected things must be addressed immediately but more often than not, I have found they can be addressed later…if at all. Just because someone comes into your office with a need or you receive a request in an email, doesn’t mean it has to be addressed right way. It just isn’t URGENT.
Let’s be real, we’re here to serve others and therefore, we really want to help. But, if your important work is getting pushed to after hours or weekends routinely, then that’s when you have to change your approach. Do the important first, then as time allows, the “urgent”.
Be focused on what’s important to you and your mission because ‘The Tyranny of the Urgent’ can totally derail you from achieving what you’ve determined as Important.
John Maxwell said “The person who forgets the ultimate is a slave to the immediate”.
Don’t work 50 hours a week and get to the end of the year to realize you didn’t achieve any or all of your goals.
Here’s the template I use in (this post).
